IAN ROBINSON

Fizz:
1999 Gosset – Yeasty, bready. Starting to show development but still good acid.

A bracket of 2004 Vincent Girardin Premier Cru whites from Puligny-Montrachet (with rankings):

2004 Puligny-Montrachet “Le Cailleret” – Fat, ripe, toasty, forward, “thick”. (5)
2004 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Folatières” – Similar to Cailleret, but touch more acid. (4)
2004 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Combettes” – Clean, flower petals on the nose, some minerality. (3)
2004 Puligny-Montrachet “Le Champ Gain” – Lightest colour of these. Palate a little dull with slight taint on the finish. (6)
2004 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Pucelles” – Light oak on the nose. Lovely nutty flavour with long clean finish. Excellent acid structure. (1)
2004 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Referts” _ Similar to the Pucelles, but a touch richer and less structure. (2)

Other whites:

2005 Chevalier-Montrachet (Philippe Colin) – Big, old-fashioned, almost rustic. Quite alcoholic.
2006 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Perrières” (Etienne Sauzet) – Beautiful wine. White flowers on the nose, fine mouth-filling flavours of pear and melon, very long finish.
2006 Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet (Louis Carillon) – Rounder peach flavours compared to the Perrieres, but also very fine, very long.

2006 Puligny-Montrachet “Les Combettes” (Louis Carillon) – Badly corked.

2003 Chablis “Les Clos” (Pinson) – Quite ripe for Chablis (typical of the vintage). Stone fruits apparent as it opened up in the glass. Enough acid to ensure a few years life yet. Most enjoyable.

1984 Pipers Brook Vineyard Chardonnay – Terrific wine. Lovely developed nutty flavours but still strong acid backbone. Made in Chablis style, unlike recent vintages (e.g., already over-developed 1999).

2001 Pipers Brook Vineyard Riesling – Corked. (Many previous bottles of this wine have been excellent.)

Reds:

2005 Vosne-Romanée “Les Beaumonts” (Hudelot-Noellat) – Fresh violets on the nose. Open, lifted, high-toned berry flavours with soft tannins on the finish. Lovely wine.
2006 Nuits-St-Georges “Les St Georges” (Robert Chevillon) – Big, rich, plummy, tannic wine. Terrific.
2006 Vosne-Romanée “Les Suchots” (Sylvain Cathiard) – Fresh, pure pinot. Violets, sweet fruit. Maybe not for the long haul.

1982 Chateau Larrivet Haut-Brion (Graves) – A little light for the vintage, but nice balance of developed Cabernet and cigar box characters. Drinking nicely.

1986 Mount Mary Cabernets – Another beautifully balanced wine with pure lifted complex red berry flavours. Clean as a whistle.

Sticky:

1988 Chateau Filhot – Not much botrytis apparent, but clean, balanced, easy-to-drink, enjoyable sweet wine. Will last for some time yet.

VP:
1977 Gould-Campbell – Still grapey, but developing complexity. Easily mistaken for a younger wine. Very good.

RALPH GRAY

1990 Lanson Champagne (en magnum) Still fresh but quite high in acid, great mousse, has great backbone & structure but just needs more time. Someone famous once said drinking this wine is like getting up at dawn on a Sunday, too bloody early!!!

1994 Mount Mary Quintets Mid colour, a great nose that just kept getting better with breathing. Palate long and of red & dark fruits. Lighter soft tannins that were harmoniously integrated and did not rip your mouth apart. A very elegant wine. I could have smelled the empty glass for hours. One of the best Australian reds that I have had in a long time. Drinking perfectly now, but will keep.

2003 Ch Bellvue Bordeaux Superiuer A great bargain at less than $10.00 kept a few back to see what they aged like and to my surprise they are drinking very well. Mid colour, nose showing some developed fruit that reflects the warmer vintage. Dark fruits on palate and finishes more new world like, possibly due to lower acid. A pleasant everyday drink.

2008 Jim Barry Watervale Riesling
Very light colour, floral nose, lacks fruit on palate but needs a year in bottle to develop a little complexity. Still good but needs time. The nose suggests that this will be a very good wine with a little extra time in bottle. 11.5% alcohol.

2008 Dominique Portet Fontaine Rose (Cabernet Merlot Shiraz) 14.5%
Very French in style. Lightly chilled, an easy drinking rose that belies it’s alcohol level. Very smooth across the palate. No overt front palate sweetness or astringency on the finish that is associated with most New world Rose’s.

1998 Peppertree Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep colour, nose reminiscent of Graves pencil shavings & cigar box. Palate rich & velvet like with some cassis / blackcurrants. Just beginning to develop with primary fruit still dominant. Will hold for many years. An excellent Coonawarra red. 13.5% Alcohol.

JERRY SENDER

Had a couple of friends for dinner so i pulled out some of my favorite wines:

1975 Gewurztraminer Pierre Sparr.
liquid gold, amazing that the bottle survived in this condition.Beautiful fruit,dried out of course,lovely nose,no bitter flavours.

1974 Chablis Grand Cru Moutonne (Bichot)
Lovely balance,suprisingly mellow ,no sign of overpowering acidity.

1964 Santenay (Gravieres) Pierre Bouree Fils.
Drinks like a wine 10 years old, big wine beautiful balance,colour very light (Onion skin) excellent fruit.

I have always felt Pierre Bouree to be one of the best shippers in Burgundy.

SAM CHAFE

Decadents Tasting, 24/2/09.

2002 Chambolle Musigny (Sigaut): Some colour. Fine nose, showing development. Palate medium-weight, some succulence, nice finish. Light for an ’02 but attractive drinking. Not ranked.

1. 1999 Chassagne Montrachet Blanchot Dessus (Anglada Deleger) (SC): Quite coloured, darkish gold. Rich nose, but a bit maderised or, as some suggested, aldehydic. Palate big and rich, lots of extract, trace bitter. Past its best but, as the saying goes, better with food. Ranked 6th (37);
2. 2000 Mount Mary Chardonnay (IB): Some colour, golden. Lovely nose, fine, matured, possibly a trace of botrytis, very Burgundian. Palate soft and fine, supple, good fruit acidity and aftertaste. Top Australian Chardonnay drinking well. Ranked 5th;
3. 2003 Mount Mary Chardonnay (PS): Bright, light gold. Fresh, fruit-salad nose. Palate quite lush, good weight and extract. Not as fine as the ’00 but perhaps needs time. Ranked 3rd (22);
4. 2001 Concha y Toro Amelia Chardonnay (PS): Light gold, lemon. Fine, fresh nose, high-toned pineapple, possibly a touch of botrytis. Palate quite good, supple, good acidity, New World in style. Slightly marred by a suggestion of dimethyl sulphide on nose and palate. Ranked 4th (31);
5. 2001 Kooyong Faultline Chardonnay (TJ): Gold. Nose reserved but a little maderised. Palate quite good, lush, good acidity, longish aftertaste. Hanging on but fading now. Ranked 8th;
6. 2006 Shadowfax Chardonnay (PD): Pale yellow. Nose fresh and citrusy. Plain, fresh, young palate. Straightforward and lacking complexity, but that is probably because of its youth. Ranked 7th (42);
7. 1996 Craiglee Chardonnay (DA): Light yellow. Fresh, young nose, a little Corton-like, but lacking complexity despite its age. Palate quite good, remarkably young for a wine 13 years old, but this bottle slightly marred for me because of a trace of dimethyl sulphide. Should go on for years. Ranked 2nd (19);
8. 2006 Chardonnay by Farr (PC): Pale yellow. Fresh, clean, open, New World nose. Palate with good weight, fresh, good acidity, citrusy. Well-made wine which may develop interesting nuances with time. Ranked 1st (15);

1979 Yalumba Dulcify Vintage Port: Quite coloured. Matured nose and long, searing palate, but marred by a slightly corked character (not picked up by some). Not ranked;
1971 Chambers Vintage Port: Quite coloured. Rich, sweet nose. Palate rich and long, seemingly not as forward as the ’79 but a finer wine.

21/2/09 – 1995 Vosne Romanee Malconsorts (Domaine Thomas Moillard) (half): Some colour, some sediment. Nose Pinot-beet root, touch metallic. Palate with good weight and structure but ferociously tannic. Still needs five years anyway.
